February 2015

Dear Madam/Sir,

It gives us immense pleasure to host the 33rd György Ránki Hungarian Chair Conference „Transformations of Urban Social Fabric in East Central Europe, 1880 to present” in Bloomington, Indiana, 28-29 March 2015. On behalf of the organizers and the Department of Central Eurasian Studies at Indiana University, we extend a warm and cordial invitation to you.

The urban scene and particularities add marked features to general social and political processes, and they also create important phenomena on their own – the importance of which has been sharply increasing in the last hundred years or so, especially in the present age of globalization, but also during the rapid urbanization in the second half of the 19th century.

Within general processes of urbanization and spatial development, such transformations have created unique, or highly altered, features in the societies of Central Europe, especially due to their historical peculiarities that makes them compelling and salient for deeper academic scrutiny for a wider audience beyond Central Europe.

This conference offers presentations from leading Hungarian scholars and professionals in various facets and phenomena related to urbanization, from generalized topics to more detailed ones, from the late 19th century to the present globalized age. Presentations are 20 minutes each, with three presentations per session. Each session concludes with 20 minutes of questions/discussion with the audience.

We look forward to seeing you at 33rd György Ránki Hungarian Chair Conference held in Bloomington, Indiana at the Indiana Memorial Union Oak Room, 900 East 7th Street.

Yours sincerely,
János B. Kocsis

Project Title

Far far away, behind the word mountains, far from the countries Vokalia and Consonantia, there live the blind texts. Separated they live in Bookmarksgrove right at the coast of the Semantics, a large language ocean. A small river named Duden flows by their place and supplies it with the necessary regelialia. It is a paradisematic country, in which roasted parts of sentences fly into your mouth.
